Description
Brother Blind Stitch Foot “R” – X56409051
The Brother Blind Stitch Foot “R” is designed to make neat,
professional-looking blind hems quickly and accurately.
The built-in guide runs along the folded edge of your fabric while the blind hem
stitch catches just a small amount of the garment fabric. When correctly adjusted,
the stitching is virtually invisible from the right side of the project.
This makes it an extremely useful presser foot for hemming
trousers, skirts, dresses, jackets, curtains and home décor projects.

How the Blind Stitch Foot Works
The hem is folded and positioned so that the folded edge runs against the guide
on the foot.
As the machine sews the blind hem stitch, most of the stitching is made along
the hem allowance. At regular intervals the needle moves across and catches only
a few threads of the main fabric.
When the hem is opened and pressed, only tiny stitches should be visible on the
right side of the garment.
Built-In Fabric Guide
The guide on the centre of the foot helps maintain a consistent distance between
the folded fabric edge and the needle.
On compatible machines, the needle position or blind hem stitch width is adjusted
on the sewing machine rather than by adjusting the guide on the foot.
This allows you to fine-tune how much of the garment fabric is caught by the
blind hem stitch.
Also Useful for Edge Stitching
Although primarily designed for blind hemming, the guide can also be used for
accurate edge stitching.
Position the fabric edge or seam against the guide and adjust the needle position
to obtain an even line of stitching at a consistent distance from the edge.

How to Sew a Blind Hem
- Finish the raw edge of the fabric if required.
- Fold and press the hem to the required depth.
- Fold the hem back so that a small amount of the finished edge projects past the fold.
- Attach the Blind Stitch Foot “R”.
- Select the appropriate blind hem stitch on your sewing machine.
- Position the folded fabric edge against the guide on the foot.
- Adjust the stitch width or needle position so the needle just catches the fold of the main fabric.
- Sew slowly, keeping the folded edge running consistently against the guide.
- Open the hem and press for a neat, professional finish.
Tips for a Nearly Invisible Hem
- Always test the blind hem stitch on a scrap of the same fabric first.
- The needle should catch only a few threads of the garment fabric.
- If too much of the stitch shows, adjust the needle position away from the fold.
- If the needle misses the fold, adjust it slightly towards the fold.
- Match your thread colour closely to your fabric.
- Press the hem carefully before and after sewing.
- For stretch fabrics, select the stretch blind hem stitch if your machine provides one.
Blind Hem Foot “R” vs Adjustable Blind Stitch Foot
This Blind Stitch Foot “R” uses a fixed guide. The position at
which the needle catches the fabric is generally adjusted using the stitch width
or needle-position controls on the sewing machine.
Brother also produces adjustable blind stitch feet on which the position of the
guide itself can be changed. These are different accessories, so always check the
recommended foot for your particular sewing machine.
